Not-To-Be Forgotten Foundation (ntbf) is a newly-formed 501(c)3
nonprofit organization which was created to acknowledge the
struggles that older adults face in maintaining quality of life in their
twilight years. Ntbf will strive to address those struggles one senior at
a time by way of public awareness, education, fulfilling needs and
granting wishes. Some needs may be simple – finding a local resource
for delivery of meals – and some may be more complicated – repairing
a roof that is financially out of the realm of the individual. Wishes
may run the gamut as well from easy to complicated. Ntbf intends to
work closely with community organizations, government agencies
and businesses utilizing all resources available to meet its requests.

About the Founder:
Ntbf’s founder, Sallie Bongaardt and her husband, Clark are both born-
and-bred Delaware County, Pennsylvania residents. For the past 25
years, they have lived in Springfield where they have raised two
children and continue to raise their third. Clark is an attorney and
practiced law locally in Media where Sallie also worked as a paralegal
for more than 20 years. Individually, as a couple and as a family, they
are both entrenched in the Delaware County community and feel it
only natural to want to give back to the community that is so
important to them.
In 1999, Sallie lost both her parents suddenly during a two-month
span. The experience opened her eyes to the needs of older adults
and their strong desire to remain in the comforts of their own home
and not be forced into facilities. As a result of that heart-wrenching
experience, Sallie and Clark sought to make a difference in the lives of
senior citizens locally and, in 2002 opened the doors to their Comfort
Keepers’ business located in Springfield. Comfort Keepers is a provider
of assisted living-type services to seniors and the disabled in their
homes thus allowing them to remain independent at home for as long
as possible
Sallie and Clark have learned a great deal in their six plus years of
operating Comfort Keepers. Throughout their work, they see daily the
struggles that seniors face in attempting to maintain a quality of life.
Those struggles do not simply have their roots in declining health and
other conditions associated with old age. Many elderly individuals are
struggling for financial reasons – they didn’t plan well enough for
their old age or suffered financial setbacks beyond their control – and
are living in less-than-adequate conditions. Some have absolutely no
family support to look after them and/or guide them. Some are
struggling to keep up in these days of lightening-speed technological
growth. Many are unable to advocate for themselves. Some are being
taken advantage of by others and are terrified to tell anyone for fear of
being placed into nursing homes. Many have dreams with little hope
of seeing them fulfilled. The list really is endless.
It was a natural progression that Not-To-Be Forgotten Foundation
(ntbf) would be created from the personal observations experienced
through Comfort Keepers. For the past few years, Sallie wanted to be
able to bring hope to older adults that during this stage of their lives,
there would be quality of life – some happiness to anticipate or some
significant need fulfilled. Perhaps a trip to the new Citizens Bank
Park baseball stadium for a baseball fan to see a Phillies game.
Perhaps a repaired or new roof to fix the leak that has been causing
buckets to be placed in strategic spots when it rains. Perhaps an
airline ticket for a son or daughter to visit who hasn’t been able to get
home to see Mom or Dad in many years. Perhaps, even, a new
television to conform to the digital requirements mandated by the U.S.
government.
While the concept of ntbf has been in the back of Sallie’s mind for
awhile, it became ever more urgent after a breast cancer diagnosis in
October 2007. Having undergone two surgeries, chemotherapy,
radiation and targeted therapy in 2008, she is on the mend and
focusing on the County’s older adult population and the struggles
they are facing. Ntbf will strive to address those struggles one senior
citizen at a time by way of public awareness, education, fulfilling
needs and granting wishes working closely with community
organizations, government agencies and businesses to utilize all
resources available.
